Choosing the Right Reward |
"Be creative.
Be clever. Celebrate Accomplishments." -- GoalManager
Once your goals
and budget are set, choosing the reward is the fun and creative
part. What reward will keep everyone motivated during the program?
Particularly if the program
has a length over 3 months, continual motivation may be an issue.
Answer these questions to find the best motivational reward:
- Who will
win the reward?
Will the entire team be rewarded or only the
top performers?
- Does it
fit into your budget?
If you haven't yet, determine your budget.
- What reward
will effectively reflect the achievement?
Is this an annual
sales program and your top performers receive new home computers
or is this a weekly accomplishment where the top project manager
receives a gift certificate for two for dinner?
- Is the
prize meaningful?
Will the individual value the reward?
Does the reward match the profiles of your team members?
Is the value large enough that it is worth the extra "oomph" it
will take to reach the goal?

If you are spontaneously
rewarding an employee or a team member, remember that rewards are
most meaningful when:
- they come
from a significant person
- they are
immediate and timely
- they are
sincere
- they are
valuable
- they have
trophy value
