Goal
Jenny
and Molly were training for the San Francisco marathon. Their
first! They had both been running for years and wanted to take
it one step up.
Staying motivated
for the next five months was going to be difficult. How were
they going to keep themselves on track? How were they going
to make themselves run 20 miles on a busy weekend? How would
they prioritize?
Molly suggested
they tally up the total mileage they should accomplish before
the marathon and then keep track of their weekly mileage and
overall mileage. Each week they would evaluate their progress.
They sent each other funny motivational quotes each day and
found ways to keep each other excited for the 26.2 mile run.
To stay motivated
about the weekly mileage, they decided they would treat themselves
to an "after-run" massage and spa day, only if they
were able to meet their weekly mileage. Finishing the marathon
was their goal but to be able to get there, it was more important
to reach the weekly milestones, sometimes being 40 miles!
Some weeks
they were so eager to reach their mileage that they exceeded
it and come race day, they were eager to show their stuff.
Throughout the race, they were excited to see the finish line
and were already anticipating their jaunt to the spa later
that day, where they would sip on cool lemon water, enjoy an
hour long massage, and swim in the hot springs pool.
By reaching
their milestones, they were able to comfortably run the entire
race and finish the race in 4 hours. By championing to the
finish line of the marathon, they were greeted by the pampering
of the spa.
