He knew his teams didn't WANT to injure themselves; it seemed many of the injuries were due to carelessness, not paying attention, not listening to directions, and perhaps unsafe working conditions. The floors were slippery and the lighting wasn't the greatest. To improve the safety for his teams, he created a simple incentive plan to motivate his team members to be a little more cautious and focus on safety for themselves and their team members. Jason wanted to decrease the injuries by 75%. Pretty aggressive!

He pulled his team together to discuss how to meet that goal. They identified workplace hazards, such as the slippery floors and bad lighting. They also identified personal mistakes such as not wearing the correct protective gear, not notifying management of possible hazards, not looking for potential hazards, etc. Once several factors were discussed, they decided they would keep track of all injuries for each month and try to lower them by focusing more on safety at work. If the teams were able to bring injuries down by 75%, everyone would receive a new car stereo. His teams were so excited!

After the first month, they were only able to bring the injuries down by 50%. However, by the second month, workplace injuries were at an all time low. They had achieved an 80% reduction in workplace injuries.

Because workplace safety is a constant problem for teams like Jason's and his program was so effective, the whole plant adopted his incentive program. His company now maintains one of the lowest injury percentages in their industry.
